Lake Nipigon 2023 - Day 7, Monday, July 3

0530-67F/55F. Solar 81%. Up early today, winds are calm and not as forecast.

0730-Study routine and coffee time are finished. Breakfast is next. Then I need to decide on my next move, since there is no wind as forecast on Zoleo.

Verse for the day from my study time: "Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you." (Psalms 9:10)

0815-Departed the anchorage. A slight breeze outside the anchorage, about 7-8 mph with small waves. Affected downwind steering but no real threat. Nevertheless, I was anxious to get to the next anchorage.

Underway - Leg 7

As it turned out I looked at three alternatives before I found something that would work in the strong breeze predicted from the south.

Attempted Alternate Anchorage - Declined Due To Shallow Depth

1009-Anchored in an unnamed bay on the north end of Bell Island, about 7' of water with mud bottom. An Island blocks the anchorage somewhat to the NE, which is open in that direction. Leg 7 was 9.7 miles. Mountain Islands were bypassed due to forecast winds with mostly exposed anchorages.

Leg 7, Day 7 - 9.7 Miles

I set up a sun shade and made sure all my batteries were being charged.

1130-Washed dishes. 77F/80F. Solar 93%. Listening to music. Breeze is settling in from S to SW.

(Tank# 3 is 6 gallons. Legs of 9.5 + 8.4 + 6.7 = 24.6 miles total so far. I expect 2-4 miles more.)

1600-Sat on the aft deck and listened to my audio book "Dragon Fire" by Ted Bell.

Prepared the grill to make grilled chicken, potatoes, salad, roll, and white wine for dinner.

Breeze is still up and temps are 83F/85F. But the wind through the cabin makes it feel cooler than it is.

1900-I downloaded video and pics from my camera, Mavic 2 Zoom, Osmo Action camera, and Pocket 2 (P2). Way more than I need but at least I have it.

Sister Susan said she got no Zoleo messages, which was alarming to hear!  Hopefully other family are getting my "I'm Okay" satellite messages and tracking info. I sent a follow up to check.  It is very important that those messages get through.

A T-storm passed with the normal wind gusts and heavy rain but it passed rather quickly. It cooled off dramatically. Much more comfortable temps.  75F/67F.

Looking N From Anchorage

2200-Came in to get ready for bed. I watched for wildlife on the shores as long as I could see. After observing the moose last night I'm more careful about watching that last hour of daylight.

Lake Nipigon 2023 - Day 6, Sunday, July 2

0545-61F/56F. Solar 74%,

Verse of the day from my study time: "What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?" (Psalms 8:4)

0930-Finished my morning routine with a large breakfast. Veggie omelet with cheese, bacon on the side, with toast, raspberry jam and a glass of OJ. Preparing to leave. Mosquitoes are bad!

Veggie/Cheese Omelet, w/ Bacon, Toast & Jam, and OJ - Fantastic!

1020-Underway in flat seas. Getting hot in the intense sun. 68F/66F. Solar 70%. Got an ice water out. It will get warm today forecast to reach 77F.

Underway

1130-Arrived at Henry's harbor and it was low terrain with marshy surroundings so I punted and decided to check out a campsite on the NW side of the Peninsula which turned out well, though I observed no campsite. The anchorage was much better. Heavily wooded, less marsh. A breeze came up to help keep the bugs at bay, though very light.

Leg 6 was 8.4 miles. Another beautiful pleasant day in the woods and on the water. Dishes are next on the agenda.

The Anchorage - Looking NW

1300-Finished dishes and conducted a general clean up. Boat is staying pretty clean with all the anchoring, almost no dirt tracked aboard, despite sandy beach last night.

1345-Planning my next move. The timing of the winds is important. Today the strength is about right but direction is way off, S to SW vs forecast NW! Perhaps the systems are moving faster than forecast?  That would explain the direction I'm seeing and the wind build up later tonight and tomorrow. I anticipate being here two days.

1600-Preparing dinner.

1630-Had grilled burger, chips, and a cold beer for dinner. Afterward I went out on the aft deck and drank a glass of wine.

Grilled Burger, Chips, & Cold Beer

Flew the drone off the bow for two flights. Checked out the second anchorage option and looked for the campsite from the air.  No luck!

1850-Charging drone and controller batteries. Took out some strawberries to thaw and will have ice cream and strawberries for dessert.  83F/84F.  Air temp is too hot and water temp too cold, 60F! Solar 98%. Waiting for the sun to duck behind the trees to help cool things off.

Quiet Evening In Secure Anchorage

Knocked the solar generator off line which shut down the fridge/freezer. The fault states there was a short in the adapter. I was using an adapter to charge batteries. I could not get the gen fault to reset.  I finally disconnected the solar cables which allowed me to shut down the gen completely which did clear the fault.  I started all over again with a second adapter and it faulted again.  I finally punted that plan and removed the adapter and went back to just powering the fridge.

I put the charge adapter on my backup solar generator and charged the batteries that way instead.

Did some more video on the aft deck then took out my rod and casted several times. I put on a new lure and casted some more. Nothing!

2200-I finally put everything away and then two moose walked out on the shore about 100 yards away.. I videoed them for about 10 minutes. Temp is now down to 70F inside, 65F outside. Solar 99%. I will listen to my audio book "Dragon Fire" by Ted Bell and hit the sack.
